Smart Sports Video Capture and Performance Tracking App for Snow Sports: Ridestrack
Overview

Business Goals & Project Overview

Business Goals

To build a smart sports platform that automatically captures rider action videos while tracking activity performance. The solution aims to reduce manual camera coordination, accurately link media to individual users and sessions, ensure reliable cloud delivery, and provide riders with performance insights, session history, leaderboards, and shareable content.

Project Overview

Ridestrack is a smart sports technology platform designed to automate action video capture and performance tracking during snow-sports activities. The solution combines a mobile application, Bluetooth beacons, GPS, Raspberry Pi devices, Sony cameras, and Firebase cloud services. During an active session, the app detects configured beacons near designated activity zones and sends a trigger to the Raspberry Pi, which controls the camera recording. Each video is linked to the correct rider using session, beacon, timestamp, GPS, and user information before being uploaded to Firebase. Riders can then access captured media through the Media Inbox while also tracking sessions, performance statistics, history, live maps, leaderboards, and shared content.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenges Faced and Conquered

The client needed to create a reliable sports capture experience that could automatically identify riders, trigger video recording at the right moment, securely associate media with each user, and maintain consistent operation across mobile, IoT, camera, and cloud technologies.

The Challenge

Capturing the Rider at the Correct Moment

Riders move quickly through predefined activity zones, making manual camera operation difficult. The system needed to detect the rider’s approach and capture the action at the right moment.

Our Solution

WebMobTech implemented Bluetooth beacon-based proximity detection using beacon IDs and RSSI validation. When a rider enters the designated capture zone, the mobile application triggers the Raspberry Pi, which automatically starts Sony camera recording with a 2-second pre-roll to capture the complete action.

The Challenge

Matching Every Capture to the Correct User

With multiple riders and sessions taking place, captured videos needed to be reliably connected to the right rider and activity session without relying on manual identification.

Our Solution

WebMobTech developed a structured media-tagging workflow linking each capture with the user ID, session ID, beacon ID, timestamp, GPS coordinates, and beacon type. This enables the platform to accurately associate every recorded video with the correct rider and activity session.

The Challenge

Preventing Media Loss in Outdoor Environments

Snow-sports locations can have unstable or intermittent internet connectivity. The platform needed a reliable way to retain captured videos until they could be successfully uploaded.

Our Solution

Captured videos are stored locally on the Raspberry Pi or camera before being uploaded to Firebase. Local files are removed only after successful upload confirmation, helping prevent media loss when snow resorts or outdoor activity locations experience unstable or intermittent internet connectivity.

The Challenge

Connecting Mobile, IoT, and Camera Technologies

The solution depended on several connected components working together, including the mobile app, Bluetooth beacons, Raspberry Pi, Sony cameras, GPS, and cloud services.

Our Solution

WebMobTech designed an event-driven architecture connecting the mobile application, Bluetooth beacons, Raspberry Pi, Sony camera, GPS, and Firebase. Each component performs a defined responsibility, creating a modular workflow that is easier to test, maintain, troubleshoot, and expand.

The Challenge

Turning Video Capture into a Complete Rider Experience

Capturing videos alone was not enough. The platform needed to connect recorded media with activity tracking, performance data, session history, and sharing features to create a complete rider experience.

Our Solution

WebMobTech combined automated video capture with session tracking, performance statistics, activity history, leaderboards, media notifications, downloads, and social sharing. This gives riders a connected experience from starting an activity session to receiving, reviewing, and sharing their captured sports content.

The system uses beacon-based detection to identify when a rider reaches a specific capture zone. Once the rider is detected within range, the connected camera setup is triggered to record the activity automatically.

The system is designed to capture short action-based clips during snow-sports activities, traffic tracking and others, especially when a rider passes through predefined zones such as approach areas, turns, or jumps.

Each capture is linked with user, session, beacon, timestamp, and location-related metadata. This helps ensure that the correct media is associated with the right rider and activity session.

Once the video is successfully processed and uploaded, users can access it through the media section of the mobile application, where they can preview, download, or share it.

The media is stored locally before being uploaded to the cloud. If the upload fails due to connectivity issues, the file can remain available for retry, reducing the risk of losing captured content.

Yes. Along with automated video capture, users can track key session details such as distance, duration, location, activity history, and performance-related insights through the mobile application.
